Preface
Probably, you have read the 4 Gospels. But, because each book is comprised of separately selected excerpts from the life and teachings of Christ, you may not have a step by step “minds-eye” view of the days Jesus spent on Earth. And, you may not be able to answer some basic questions, like ...
1. On which day of Holy Week was Jesus Crucified?
Wednesday? Thursday? Friday?
2. Did Judas consume the bread and wine Christ served
at the first “Lord’s Supper” ceremony?
3. Did Jesus wash Judas’ feet at the “Last Supper”?
4. How many times did Jesus cleanse the Temple of
sacrifice-animal vendors and moneychangers?
To answer these and similar questions about the events of Holy Week as recorded in Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, we have woven together in chronological sequence each of the verses from these 4 Gospels to educe the full story of that important time.
As we strove to do this well, we were beset with several difficulties:
1. We do not have the original documents
written by the early Christians. Our present day Bibles are excellent, but the translators who prepared them for us worked from numerous copies of copies of the original documents. Fortunately, these copies agree in most respects. However, as we sequenced the events in these Gospels, often, just one word like “before” or “after” or “next” influenced our comprehension of them. So, it’s easy to see why you might think we have some events in the wrong order. Nevertheless, we trust that experiencing the full sweep of Holy Week will bless you.
2. Date related statements in the Gospels are
often casual, informal and colloquial. Not
scientific.
3. At times, Jesus repeated some parables in a
variety of forms in various venues. We
should not try to conflate these into one
utterance. Jesus walked from village to
village spreading the Word. With no mass
media available, He needed to repeat
His Messages in each venue. And probably, He
tailored His Stories to the folks in each of His
audiences.
Despite these problems, it has been instructive to weave our 4 accounts of Holy Week into a single, sequential narrative.
